Brooks Woodworks Newsletter May 2007 _____________________________________________________________________________________
Welcome to May, the unofficial start of summer. Normally, May has great weather. It is just turning hot, but still has cooler nights. The breezes are mild, the days are long, and the living is good. And for the kids, school is out for summer vacation. This year though, I think Mother Nature got the months that start with "M" confused. We started out with some rains, and constant winds like those you see in March. These continued for most of the month. But, as Memorial Day arrived in the USA, so to did that summer weather.
In the shop, things started out blustery too, but then heated up as the month progressed. First, our entry into the Thorsen Table Challenge was begun. Things seemed to start well, then became a bit rough. However, we recovered and completed the project on May 25. We also had time to complete a few smaller items as well. All of these are listed below.
On a special note, June 2007 will be our one year anniversary. Yes, it has already been a whole year since Brooks Woodworks began. So sit back in your easy chair with a cool drink, and help us celebrate our anniversary and the return of summer!
The Thorsen Table Challenge project has been completed. While you can read more about it on the Lumberjocks web site, basically the challenge was to build an interpretation of the Thorsen Table. Our take was a bit different. We thought, what would a common person buy if they could not afford the Thorsen Table. Our answer, a mission style table with a few distinctly difference features. You can see pictures of the End Table on our website.
While we were constructing the End Table, we also wrapped up a few smaller projects as well. The first of these was a Candle Box made of Red Oak with a Purple Heart handle. The second item was a Candle Sconce, made of Pine and stained with Cherry. Pictures of both these items can also be found on our web site.
Our next project is scheduled to be the print stand based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design. After that, a small storage rack, some DVD storage boxes, and maybe even a chest. The status of these projects will be updated in our next newsletter.
Looking further out, we still have plans to build an Adirondack chair, some picture frames, as well as a few additional tables. Details about these projects will appear in the newsletter as they begin.
The End Table is complete, with a description and pictures posted to our website.
We have completed the first of our new "giftable" items, the Candle Box and Candle Sconce. We will continue to expand these items throughout the summer.
In the meantime, be sure to check our web site for pictures of all the items built to date.
Our list of recommended projects has not changed much recently, but is still includes quite a few items. While we are working to introduce more items in our smaller product line. We are still working on designs for our planters, cutting boards, storage boxes, shelves, and other home decorating items.
If you have any additional product recommendations, send your suggestions to
firstname.lastname@example.org. Hopefully, we will be able to build most of your dream items in 2007.
As always, we like to thank you for reading our newsletter. If you have any suggestions on items you would like to see added to the newsletter, please let us know at email@example.com.
Until next month, stay well and enjoy.
