Brooks Woodworks Newsletter                                                                       March 2007 _____________________________________________________________________________________

Say hello to March, the contested month. Why do I think of March as the contested month? First, March is the epic struggle between Mother Nature and Old Man Winter. Mother Nature wins this round, and spring begins to arrive. Second, March arrives like a lion and leaves like a lamb (OK, generally speaking). Third, there is that whole thing about the ides of March. Fourth, there is the basketball craze that sweeps the nation each year. Finally, and new this year, the change to daylight savings time. The body says it is early, the clock says it is later.

Eventually all the contests end, and things return to a normal state. Spring returns, the weather becomes mild, and the body gets used to the new time. Thus, the new cycle begins, and life marches on.

Even work in the shop has a feel of the contest. The Artist Painting Stand has been a contest of form versus function. The weather requires a sweatshirt one day, and just a t-shirt the next. The daylight makes the mornings seem too early, and yet it lasts longer in the afternoon. But is there a better way to spend your day than doing what you want, and simply enjoying the day? Not from our point of view.

Shop Notes

The Artist Painting Stand for our local artist is in the final stages (talk about contests). Look for pictures on our website in the next few days.

Our next projects include a few smaller items. A print stand based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design, a small storage rack, and a candle sconce. Keep watching for information on these projects as they are completed.

Looking beyond the small projects, a few larger ones will also be taking place. One of our favorite sites, Lumberjocks has a Thorsen Table Challenge that we plan to enter. This contest is to build an interpretation of the Thorsen Table, a table from the arts and crafts era.

We also plan on building an Adirondack chair, as well as a few additional tables. Details about these projects will appear in future editions of this newsletter as they are underway.

The Artist Painting Stand description and pictures will be posted to our website in the next few days.

We are also working on a line of gift related items to introduce in the spring of 2007.

In the meantime, be sure to check our web site for pictures of all the items built to date.

During the next few weeks, we will begin work on our various gift giving and smaller items. These include planters and cutting boards, storage boxes, shelves, and other home decorating items.
